Summer... a time of long warm balmy days, tee shirts and shorts, dining al fresco and slopping around in flip flops, (or thongs if your aussie). Lovely, so whats the problem? As far as the first three are concerned nothing, it is the latter that can be a bit of an issue.
It is in August and September that we see more ankle, achilles and foot problems than at other times of the year. Much of this is due to the fact that we all spend much more time in the summer wearing footware, like flip flops, that provides little or no support . Whilst many can get away with this, many can't.
Those who are more susceptible are people
. who are naturally either knock kneed or bandy legged,
. who have flatter feet than normal
. who have had ankle fractures
. who are over weight
. who have wear and tear in their foot or ankle
. who have tight calves or hamstrings
In order to try to prevent problems if you fall into any of these categories, make sure you limit the time you spend walking barefoot or using flip flops to no more than 30 minutes a day. Ensure sandals have a good supportive arch with thick spongy soles; the type that you would wear trekking are ideal. If you already have a problem then seek some advice sooner rather than later...........
Enjoy the balmy summer weather ........... I'm ever hopeful!
