...an autumn fitness campaign???

For those of you that read the previous news item you may be asking what happened to the summer if you were in the UK this year!

The summer however is all behind us now and with September well into its swing thoughts turn to autumn. Often at this time, as the children return to school, we notice parents and mums in particular attempt to get into a better fitness routine. The following are a few tips to follow

Make sure you do something you enjoy….it won’t last if you hate what you are doing.

Try to do some exercise four days out of seven for a minimum of half an hour but aiming for longer

Don’t always do the same thing. A brisk walk (so that you are a bit hot and sweaty!) a swim , a gym session, running up several flights of stairs, cycling, an exercise class or doing some exercises at home, a run in the country or round the roads are all easy ways to vary your exercise.

Making it easy to do is essential. If you have to make a huge detour to get to where you will cycle, swim, run etc you won’t keep it up.

When walking, running, cycling etc vary your pace. Research shows that doing slow long runs interspersed with shorter faster runs improves fitness and quickens weight loss. Make out a weekly schedule or visit runnersworld.co.uk for some ready made ones.

If you know you are very overweight, start slowly and build up gradually to avoid damaging your back and lower limb joints. It is better to begin with cycling or swimming than weight bearing exercise such as, running or exercise classes

And finally….

…. Exercise little and often rather than one long session a week is much
